In 1870 tragedy visited Anna and Horatio Spafford.  Their only son died of scarlet fever at the age of four. One year later, tragedy struck again.  The city they lived in, Chicago, IL, was ravaged by fire.  Three hundred people died and over 100,000 were left homeless.

Horatio, a lawyer, had invested much of his money in downtown Chicago real estate.  Their losses were great.  Later, the family decided to take some time off and go to Europe.  Mr. Spafford was delayed by some last-minute business, but sent his wife and four daughters on ahead.  The ship they were traveling on collided with another vessel and sank in 20 minutes.  Mrs. Spafford sent her husband a telegram which said, “Saved Alone.”

Horatio caught the next ship to England.  As he struggled with his Christian faith in light of these tragedies, he decided to trust God in spite of the circumstances.  As tangible evidence of his faith, he penned the words to one of the most famous Christian hymns of all time, “It Is Well With My Soul.”
